Your Guide to Bed Sheet Sizes: Tailoring Your Bedding for the Perfect Fit

What size is that orphan sheet? What type of bed will it fit? Sheets are the basis of a restful night’s sleep. Because they’re meant to fit around a mattress and tuck underneath, having the perfect sheet means less repositioning and more joyful snoozing. Here is our simple guide to sheet sizes, made for all the world’s beds.

The linen closet can be a place of infinite secrets. It holds generations of sheets, sometimes separated from their original partners, all piled on top of one another. Was that a king-fitted sheet? Queen? You can’t be sure. It fits…almost…when placed sideways. Or was that the right way?

The great sheet try-on is a ritual we repeat before our guests arrive, and we don’t always find the time after they’ve departed to determine what we have, what works, and what no longer fits any of the beds in the house.

Take a moment to determine what sheets you have and need. You can even compare them to your mattress. Here are the average dimensions for fitted sheets.

Understanding Bed Sheet Sizes

Twin Bed Sheet Sizes

Twin beds, often called “singles,” are typical in small bedrooms for children, teens, and singles with limited space. They’re also helpful in large guest rooms, bunk-bed style, to wrangle large families and accommodate a houseful of children.

Bed sheets for twin beds are long and thin, and it’s nearly impossible to put them on sideways accidentally.

Twin XL Bed Sheet Sizes

Twin XL beds are longer and slightly thinner than twin mattresses. They’re common in hospitals and dorms and can be handy for growing teens and adults who want more room to stretch their legs but still live within a small footprint.

You may also use twin bed sheets for your “split king” bed, which uses two twin XL mattresses next to one another. As split king beds become more popular for couples with differing sleep patterns, you’re likely to see twin XL sheets becoming easier to find. For now, they’re most prominent in late summer when “back to school” and dorm essentials are all the rage.

Full (Double) Bed Sheet Sizes

A full (often called a double) bed maintains the short stature of a twin (with 5 fewer inches of legroom) but is significantly wider than a twin. That makes it a good option for adult singles in small(ish) spaces or growing teens in small bedrooms.

You can often upgrade to a full mattress while maintaining room for a dresser and desk in large secondary bedrooms. While most teens and adults will be more comfortable sleeping on a full bed, room dimensions dictate your best choice. Many adults in small studios who require work and sleep space all in one room prefer a twin-sized bed.

A full-sized bed is narrower and shorter than a queen, making queen sheets a poor fit. Since twin sheets are also significantly narrower, the full bed requires right-sized bedding.

Queen Bed Sheet Sizes

This popular mattress makes up the lion’s share of mattress purchases today. It’s easy to see why: the queen bed has the extra length of a twin XL and king, but with a narrower profile, so you won’t need a large home with outsized rooms to fit this bed suitable for couples (especially compared to a full). Further, it is a focal point in small to medium owner’s suites, rather than getting lost in a sea of carpet.

King Bed Sheet Sizes

The widest standard bed in the US, the king offers a roomy sleep environment for couples and even accommodates pets and children much more easily than a queen. It is especially appealing to couples with mixed sleep patterns. For instance, a hot-sleeper and a cold-sleeper could both find temperature balance in the roomy king bed. Those with sleep disorders also find themselves more isolated from their partners, for fewer interruptions on both sides of the sheet.

California King Bed Sheet Sizes

Gain even more length, while trimming some width, to get the California king. With slightly less surface area than a king, it can be a respite for tall couples while offering significant side-to-side gains over the queen.

If you have a split California king, your “Cal Twin” mattresses are a unique size. You’ll look for two Cal Twin fitted sheets and a single California king flat sheet.

International Bed Sheet Sizes

Smaller buildings have led to different standard bed sizes. Further, measurement conversions collide, making comparing bedding across the pond and beyond challenging. Here are all the dimensions, in all the units, so you know what sizes you have or news (and how they compare to your standard US bed sheet sizes).

UK Fitted Sheet Sizes

In the UK, standard bed sizes are slightly different. While they retain the same names, the fitted sheet sizes (which closely align with mattress size) differ slightly. Sheets aren’t interchangeable between the UK and EU, even when the bed sheet sizes carry the same names. Here are the UK sheet sizes:

The bottom line? Bed sheet sizes vary, even when the name’s the same. Don’t be fooled. Where you purchase sheets makes a big difference in how they fit, and it’s a good idea to measure your sheets from corner to corner (and your mattress, too) to ensure they’re compatible.

Measuring for the Perfect Fitted Sheet Fit

Measure a mattress from edge to edge, starting with the width dimension. Next, measure head to toe. Don’t forget to measure the depth, including any pillow top that could add depth.

The edge-to-edge measurement is called the “platform” for your sheets. The sides of a fitted sheet that pull down over the mattress sides are called the “pocket.” You can measure an existing sheet’s platform by measuring the width and length from the innermost corner of the cinching in both directions. But don’t forget to measure the depth of the pocket, too, as this is where many modern sheets fall short.

Measuring the pocket can also tell you if you have sheets that are designed to accommodate thick mattresses or toppers. These are usually called “deep” or “extra deep” and are meant to accommodate a mattress greater than the standard 14” (that’s 36 cm or 1’2”) deep.

Sheets with Significant Overlap that May Fit Multiple Mattresses

Twin and Twin XL Sheet Overlap

While twin and Twin XL mattresses have different dimensions, the flat sheets are typically the same. There are even fitted sheet sets designed to fit both mattress sizes.

Queen, Short Queen, and Olympic Queen Sheet Overlap

These sizes often share sheet sets. However, their dimensions differ, and sheets designed for a short queen or queen bed may only sometimes stretch to fit an Olympic queen.

Adjustable and Split Bed Sheet Overlap

Sheets for split beds, like a split king or split California king, can overlap with twin and twin XL fitted sheets. A California king bed, with its custom “Cali Twin” mattresses, often uses a slightly wider twin XL sheet when custom sheets aren’t available. As with other beds that often share sheets, the fit isn’t perfect. For a restful night’s sleep, ensure your fitted sheets fit snugly on your bed and are crafted to match the dimensions of your mattress.

Fabric Considerations for Different Sheet Sizes

The fabrics you choose for your bedding sheets can also facilitate the restful sleep that comes with an ideal fit. For example, you may want to consider:

  • Elasticity: stretchable fabrics can fit better and stay in place, even if your mattress is slightly irregular.
  • Shrinkage: Natural fibers like cotton that haven’t been pretreated tend to shrink over time. A cotton mix with synthetic materials can last longer.
  • Fabric Weight: Heavy fabrics can feel more luxurious but might be more challenging to tuck under mattresses.
  • Quality of Construction: Wider elastic bands, cinched corners, and deep sheets are engineered to fit better and stay in place longer.
  • Breathability: Sheets that wick moisture and stay cool can mean you’re repositioning your body less at night, making it more likely your sheets stay in place.

Are Bed Sheet Sizes the Key to Sleep Wellness?

Well, why wouldn’t they be? After all, a good fit does wonders for our clothes and, by proxy, our sense of well-being, strength, beauty, and happiness. Bed sheet sizes impact overall sleep wellness, too. A proper fit means less bunching, less bother, and quite simply, more smooth sailing and uninterrupted sleep. In fact, one bedding study cited by Dr. Weil finds that new sleep systems helped subjects get better rest and report deeper, more restful sleep. Here are some ways:

  • As with clothing, a bed that looks smart, crisp, inviting, and put-together boosts our mood.
  • Properly fit sheets allow for more airflow around sleepers for better temperature regulation, which is crucial for deeper sleep
  • Feeling enveloped in luxurious materials in a space set aside for sleep can help you transition to bed, fall asleep faster, and get more sleep.
  • Soft, hypo-allergenic fabrics that aren’t bunching or itching are another key to uninterrupted sleep.
  • Sheets that fit correctly can reduce the stress of extra nighttime adjustments. That sense of well-being and calm leads to better sleep. That’s true for most sleepers, with 75% of sleepers saying the quality of bed linen impacts their sleep.

FAQ

What size is a 60” x 80” sheet?

That’s a queen-size fitted sheet. If you find its partner, you can double-check: the queen flat sheet should measure 96” x 102”.

Why are my queen sheets too small?

If you’re sure you’re looking at a queen fitted sheet, measuring approximately 60” x 80”, look at 1. Whether your sheet may have shrunk in the dryer. 2. Whether your deep or extra-deep mattress, or mattress topper,  is causing the problem, not the width and length dimensions. 3. You’re perhaps dealing with mismatched international bed and mattress sizes.

Should you buy king sheets for a queen bed?

Many consumers love this approach. They get bigger, share-proof flat sheets that are easy to tuck under their mattress, no matter how thick. But for fitted sheets, we can’t help but wonder if larger sheets are contributing to lots of nighttime adjustments. In the end, it’s likely more restful to stick with oversized bedding, if it makes you feel wrapped in extra luxury, rather than oversized sheets.

Besides, PureCare flat sheets come with 4 extra inches of width to ensure you’re never tugging over a sheet.

What is the largest sheet size?

There are lots of custom options, but the largest size typically available from speciality retailers is the Alaskan king, at a whopping 108” x 108” (its flat sheet is a shopping 136”136”). Among standard bedding sizes, a king sheet gives you more surface area than the California king. It measures 76” x 80” (with a flat sheet measuring 108” x 102”).
